This presentation will share field observations around the making and wearing of fabric masks during the Covid-19 pandemic in Canada. I will discuss the official public health advice and political statements around mask-wearing, some of which have “gone viral”. Particular attention will be paid to the distinction between private volunteer sewists who mobilize using social media, and professional or semi-professional commercial options that permit individuals to express brand identities and design savvy. Discussion will also cover the Indigenous craft movement to make masks that reflect traditional cultural practices.
